Apart from successfully passing School Certificate Art, I have had no specific, formal training in art, thus I consider myself largely self-taught with a definite leaning towards watercolour as a preferred medium. The last 40 years of my working life was primarily in the advertising field. Since leaving employment after 30 years as Art Director at the Christchurch Star newspaper, I have been able to concentrate on becoming a water colourist, initially having 2 years part-time tuition from renowned artist Robert McDowell in Christchurch before moving to Paihia. There I rapidly expanded the creation and sales of original land and seascapes of this beautiful part of New Zealand. Upon returning to the South Island I operated two home/studio galleries, firstly in Havelock and then Canvastown. Today, the watercolour artists I most admire, are those who create quite loose, semi-impressionistic work in a format called "casual realism" - something I constantly aim for in all my work. And living in North Canterbury now for the last three years, has given me much scenic inspiration. Silver Birches in AutumnBy Devon Huston
