Although by profession a graphic designer and creative director he has had a love of, and produced, landscape works from his early teens. He resigned from his successful graphic design business in January 2000 to move into landscape fulltime. His main interest lies in semi-traditional and contemporary landscape influenced by his fascination for light and shade on land forms and the diverse nature of the New Zealand landscape. However, seeking new challenges he spent several weeks in Italy in late 2004 which resulted in a successful exhibition of Italian themed works in 2005. This series of paintings were executed in acrylic on stretched canvas panels to provide a fresh look for this new subject matter. Following a similar time spent in France in September / October of 2006 Wayne produced a quantity of work for an exhibition of acrylic works featuring the towns and villages of that country for an exhibition in 2009Waiting for the tide to turn, Wanganui Inlet, NelsonBy Wayne McPhail
