Born in England and based in Christchurch for more than 30 years, Morant describes himself as a "largely self-taught abstractionist". Highly successful overseas, he has held exhibitions in London, New York, Tokyo, Miami, Valencia, Beijing, Istanbul and Italy. He has also recently been honoured with several prestigious international awards. These include the Lorenzo II Magnifico Award Premio alia Carriera  (Lifetime Achievement in Art award) at the Florence Biennale, as well as the Manifestation of the Spirit Through Art award in Ferrara and, in absentia, the Premio Internationale d'Arte award at Vico del Garno in Southern Italy. "Locally, I'm not so well known and my work falls through the cracks a bit here," says Morant. "But the awards that I've received from my peers around the world show that I'm on the right track."
