Richard was born in Ashburton, educated in Christchurch and is now working out of his studio in Auckland. Growing up in the South Island inspired his interest in the land and Richard’s figurative sculptures echo the forms the land takes - through his eyes the two are intrinsically connected. Originally self taught as a sculptor, he carved his first figure in wax aged 8. Traditional schooling then followed and formal studies have included oil painting, life drawing and sculpture. He has also attended Master Classes with notable painters in New Zealand and Paris. Richard’s work has been exhibited in Auckland where he has gained both public and private commissions, including a wide array of human portraits. Pieces of his work are in international collections, notably the UK and the USA. Using traditional methods and medium these emotion filled sculptures tell human stories in a contemporary context.
