Beatrice Bourhis – Mixed Media Artist Beatrice’s abstract, mixed media paintings are vibrant, playful and visually rich. In her works, on glass and metal, Beatrice expresses her emotional and cognitive responses to the environment and aspects of life, creating visual textures of great depth, through the complex layering and interweaving of colours and brushstrokes. Born in Constance, of German & French descent, she lived most of her life in the South of Germany near the Alps. The desire to be creative was always a dominant feeling, which she didn’t explore until she visited Barcelona in 1996. Being exposed to the interesting, beautiful and uplifting architecture and mosaic work of Antonio Gaudi sparked her enthusiasm for her creative path. After extensive travelling, she settled in Golden Bay in 1998. While working part time, she focused her creative thoughts and energy into both, sculptural and functional art. She began with mosaic and ferro cement works. Beatrice is mainly self-taught. Through a lot of experimenting and constant searching for new ways of combining a variety of materials, she has found a way to express the beauty of her surroundings and life itself. She used mosaic as a stepping stone and moved on to a more contemporary level. Using the mosaic structure with the clean lines of such materials as glass, metal, perspex and acetate, gave her more options to create with; but she still searched for better ways to express moods, impressions, thoughts and environmental subjects. Combining the two ancient practices of mosaic and glass painting she developed a way of composing artworks that are unique. Now, her abstract painting style is an integral aspect to her work.
