Brian BaxterShow current work by this artist | Show sold work by this artist Brian Baxter has established himself over the last 30 years or so as one of New Zealand’s foremost artists in the field of landscapes, still-lifes and florals. These he paints in oils, watercolours and acrylics in a style he describes as 'traditional representational'. Born in Kaikoura in 1940 and educated in Blenheim, he started his working career as a window dresser/showcard writer, then ran his own signwriting business for several years. In 1973 he went fulltime painting as a professional artist and since then has exhibited in most of the main centres in New Zealand as well as Adelaide, Australia and Washington DC. In 1977 he won first prize in the prestigious Kelliher awards, the last year in which they were held, and his work now hangs in many countries throughout the world. In 2000 and 2001 he and his wife Kathy undertook extensive working trips to Europe and the UK from which he collected valuable painting material. Much recent work is from this material and much more is yet to be portrayed on canvas, board or paper. New Zealand still provides the bulk of Brian’s inspiration however, and although most work is now produced in his home studio, occasional sorties out and about for 'plein air' painting provide necessary stimulus from time to time.
