Rory McDougall, born in 1965, moved to New Zealand in 1999 after extensive travels through Europe. He exhibited from early years on in several places in Scotland - later when living in Germany he worked together with a Gallerist from Hannover and for the 5 years of his stay was involved in several Group and Individual Exhibitions. In 2001 he and his partner organised a stone symposium in his New Zealand hometown Hokitika. During the last years he got invited to several Symposia with focus on hardstone. Te Kupenga held in 2004 and 2006 are the more memorable events (visit Te Kupenga website for more information). He works in a variety of media including stone, steel, glass, canvas and the landscape. "I was raised in the Highlands of Scotland, an area full of Piktish-Keltic stonework and archeology. The doodles on my school books attracted the attentions of my art teacher. And so at the age 12 my mind was introduced to the book Keltic Art - Methods of Construction by George Bain. Coincidentally Mr Bain had taught in the same school 50 years previous. So to this day I continue my research and application of this art in all its forms. 'Theory may inform but practice convinces' The origin, meaning and context of this art fills books, so I shall reduce it to the core; water. Water and all her creations. From Geo-Biology to the facets of snow crystals. From the lobes and folds of plant buds to the main three rings left by every raindrop on a pond. Patterns of life itself.'"
