Viewers new to Craig Fletcher’s work frequently believe they are looking at the actual object, be it pebbles, bumble bees or seaweed without realizing that they are the creation of the ceramicist. His plaques are low-relief sculptures washed with water colour, occasionally high lighted with gold leaf. They begin as pencil drawings on paper then are drawn on to a slab of clay which becomes the original sculpture. Once completed, up to fifteen impressions are made in this clay and then the original is destroyed. These are then fired and then they emerge form the kiln pure white and ready to be painted. Some of these images are also cast into bronze, patinated and gilded. Craig is currently working with material and colours that have special qualities of naturalness, earthiness and purity. These qualities are abundant around the coastline and hillside where Craig has made his home in the South Island of New Zealand. Born in 1960 in England, Craig has been a full time professional artist for over 20 years. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in New Zealand and overseas and has been recognised with awards from both the print industry and the Arts community.
